The most important building task in Islamic architecture was the mosque. Together with the madrasa (Arabic: madrasa, a type of university) and other buildings, such as soup kitchens (Turkish: imaret) and tombs, they formed large mosque complexes (Turkish: külliye) in later periods. Other important building types were fortified rest stops along overland routes, caravanserais (Turkish: han), palaces and kiosks (Turkish: köšk), as well as bridges and fortifications of all kind.
