Mashrabiyya

Mashrabiyya are decorative wooden grilles that have come down to us from many areas of the Islamic world in various functions (barriers, window grilles, openwork tympana).

Comparable are Jali carved from stone or marble, which can be found mainly on the Indian subcontinent and here in the finest work in the Mughal period. There are similar architectural elements made of stucco in the Gulf States (e.g. in Muharraq, Bahrain).
