Located on the Nile island of Zamalek, the Gezira Palace, built by the German architect Julius Franz between 1863 and 1868, served to accommodate high-ranking guests of Khedive Ibrahim Pasha who were attending the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. After various uses, the building became part of the Marriott Hotel in 1974.
