The United Arab Emirates (UAE) were made up of 7 very different sheikdoms in terms of oil resources, wealth and popularity, by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan (1918-2004) in 1971: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain and Fujeirah.
